HARDLY dressed for the occasion, these cycling enthusiasts have set off on a 420-mile cycle to Scarborough from Wantage Market Place.

The group, from the national Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC), are raising money for cycling charity Sustrans.

They started in Wantage because it was in a field near the town that CCC founder Thomas Hiram-Holding held the first club outing with six friends in 1901. The four club members set off at 9am on Sunday morning dressed in garments remembering their founder.

Kimberley Keay, 26, a communications executive from Sheffield, said: “Having been born into a family of cyclists I grew to love the sport from a very young age.

“Looking ahead to the challenge, I’m especially looking forward to cycling round my old training roads in the Peak District.”

The challenge takes six days with the team camping overnight at CCC club sites along the way. Dylan Griffiths, 34, a marketing manager from Wrexham in Wales, said: “I’m always looking for a new challenge and cycling across the UK for six successive days seems a good one to achieve.”

The team’s challenge also celebrates the 14th annual Camping and Caravanning Week, taking place this week.
