Morrisons puts its plans on show

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons is urging shoppers to come to see its plans for a new mid-sized store on the outskirts of Wallingford.
A public exhibition is being staged over two days to show residents what the foodstore will look like.
Morrisons say the store on the Hithercroft industrial estate will provide more than £25m of investment, with a new four-pump filling station and a shoppers’ car park featuring 280 spaces.
The supermarket is expected to create about 300 full and part-time jobs.
The exhibition will take place at Wallingford Methodist Church Hall in St Leonard’s Square on Friday, September 14, from noon until 6.30pm, and at Centre 70 in Kinecroft on Saturday, September 15, from 11am to 5pm.
Morrisons bosses say there are no artists’ impressions yet of what the store would look like but they will be available at the exhibition.
Morrisons development executive Andrew Birtwhistle said: “Getting the public’s feedback, opinions and ideas is a crucial part of the development process.”

While Waitrose food is very nice, it's more expensive than most. Morrisons sell excellent food and prices are on par with the dreaded Tesco/Sainsburys. The filling station is a good thing too. There's been a monopoly on both for too long. Plus it'll provide much needed jobs in the area too.
The new store will be a 15-20 minute drive from Oxford, Henley & Caversham.
Perhaps it is now time to build a new bridge over the Thames between Shillingford & Dorchester with a link road to the A4130 to complete the Wallingford Bypass.
It would certainly ease a lot of congestion in the area.

The new build at Didcot will choke the villages with even more traffic, queueing at Clifton Hampden/Culham to cross the river.
Anyway, a Morrisons isn't a bad idea, their fuel is usually cheaper than Tesco/Sainsburys and the food is fine enough. They also do a good cooked breakfast in the cafe; reet northern style!!!

Traders in the town centre should have no fears, their type of produce, flowers, newspapers etc that Morrisons will sell, will not take away from their businesses- Waitrose already sell these items - so if shoppers were going to 'move' they will have already done so.
It may well be that a few people who drive to waitrose AND then shop in town sfterwards, may make fewer overall trips into town IF they were to swap to Morrisons for their shopping.
On the other hand regular town shoppers will continue to use the facilities ( banks, post office, theatre etc) no matter where they do their main food shop.
Having Morrisons in Wallingford will undoubtedly bring in shoppers & visitors from other areas and this can only be a good thing for Wallingford.
In addition, the boost to jobs in the area would be very welcomed.
We should try to advertise our beautiful riverside town to Morrisons shoppers & encourage them to visit us regularly and bring their families & friends too! maybe this is a project for the tourist info & Wallingford partnership?
I believe that we should all welcome Mossrisons with open arms.

A lot of people will come to the store from outside Wallingford so a roundabout on Hithercroft will def. needed.
SODC need to grab the old Waitrose store problem and get a couple of shops on the frontage with residential above it.
