Royal Air Force reservists from RAF Brize Norton are providing round-the-clock medical care at the world’s largest airshow this weekend.

Doctors, nurses, medics and paramedics from 4626 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, based at RAF Brize Norton, are giving up their spare time to look after military personnel and the public at this year’s the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT).

Wing Commander Tom James said: "With the vast amount of operational aircraft and military personnel at work here, RIAT brings us as close to simulating operations as we can get, so we bring quite a few trainees here."

At this year’s RIAT, the team has set up a field hospital and move around the airshow in teams of three – a doctor, nurse and paramedic – so they can to respond quickly to any medical emergencies on or off site.

Squadron Leader Ruth Van Hoogstraten, a Consultant Anaesthetist for both the NHS and the RAF, said: “The regulars we were working with in Afghanistan didn’t actually know we were reservists; they only found out after our tour.

"They simply couldn’t tell the difference.”
