THOUSANDS of people will flock to Wallingford in June bringing a hoped-for boost to trade and tourism in what is expected to be the town’s busiest month of the year.

Civic leaders expect the much-anticipated English Civil War battle re-enactment to be the highlight of next month’s packed schedule.

More than 4,000 visitors are expected to pack the town on the weekend of June 27-28 as more than 750 Roundheads and Cavaliers from the English Civil War Society gather.

More than 750 society members will set up a living history camp in the town centre on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, June 27, and stay for the weekend.

Some members of the society will join RAF Benson personnel on Friday, June 26, for a parade through the town centre But the battle re-enactment on the site of the former Wallingford Castle is not only major event in June, and every weekend is booked up.

Mayor-elect Lynda Atkins said: “It’s our busiest month of the year – Wallingford will really be celebrating.

“We hope the re-enactment will attract lots of people.

“On Sunday, June 7 there is the mayor’s parade, then the following weekend, on June 12 and June 13, it’s the beer and blues festival.

“On Saturday, June 20, it’s the Wallingford Carnival and Rugfest music festival, and on Sunday, June 21, it’s the festival of cycling.”

Wallingford in Business spokeswoman Elaine Hornsby said: “All these different events will bring in thousands of people and that should be good for trade.”
