WALLINGFORD will be transformed into a Second World War winter wonderland for this year’s Christmas Festival.

From noon on Sunday, December 7, shop windows will have 1940s scenes, Santa’s grotto will be in an air raid shelter and the Women’s Institute will be serving up Spam fritters.

The event will raise money for the Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA), the oldest military charity in the country.

The festival, which will feature 30 stall holders and shops staying open late, is expected to attract thousands of people.

Organiser Elaine Hornsby, who owns gift shop First Edition, said: “We are winding the clock back to 1943, everyone will dress up and there will be a vintage bus serving vintage cocktails.
