Free school backers to visit ministry

A bid to set up a free school specialising in science and engineering has taken a step forward.

The New Oxfordshire Schools Trust, a group hoping to set up the school at the Harwell Science Campus, has been invited to a meeting next month with officials at the Department for Education.

The school, to be called the Harwell Enterprise Academy, plans to cater for up to 800 pupils, aged 11 to 18. Its curriculum will have an emphasis on science and business subjects.

Terry Stock, a former chief executive of Vale of White Horse District Council and the trust’s chairman, said: “We want to provide a school that directly addresses the needs of some of the local top employers and exciting enterprises.

“Being based on the Harwell campus will allow the school to provide a truly unique and exciting experience for boys and girls of all abilities to acquire the skills and confidence needed to enter the workplace in their chosen careers.”

Last July, the group was told it had not demonstrated enough demand in the area for the new school. Its second bid was backed by an education company and businesses.

The involvement of Terry Stock is the greatest guarantee of the seriousness of this group imaginable. Amidst the sometimes shockingly unprofessional and indeed frankly incompetent senior managers who abound in Oxfordshire's local authorities (the County being the worst), he stood out for his clear-sighted stewardship of the Vale administration, even during the disastrous leadership of Jerry Patterson et al. It is good to know he is still actively involved in civic life in this part of the world.
