WANTAGE Leisure Centre had to partly close for a deep-clean after waste water began leaking from a changing room ceiling.

The centre, in Portway, had to close its pool and changing rooms because of the leak, which happened at about 11am yesterday.

Contractors had been working to unblock a drain on in the first floor changing rooms when a leak began in the ceiling of the ground floor the changing facilities, a spokesman said.

The closure lasted for about three and a half hours as the facility was deep-cleaned.

GLL, which runs the centre, said a blocked drain connected to a sink was being worked on by contractors when the leak began.

Waste water from the pipes then began leaking into the changing room. GLL said that it had no reports of the water coming into contact customers or their property.

It is understood that children had been in the changing rooms at the time ahead of a swimming lesson.

People who were due to be taking part in the centre's Swim School will be entitled to a refund, GLL said.

Oxford Mail:

Mark Sesnan, managing director for GLL, said: "This leak was contained to the changing room on the ground floor only, but the changing room and the pool were closed as a precaution whilst they were thoroughly checked and deep-cleaned.

"Both the changing room and pool were reopened at 2.30pm for business as usual with no lasting damage affecting any area of the centre."

She added that Vale of White Horse District Council had been informed.
