Older people and animals are particularly at risk as temperatures hit 34C in Oxfordshire today.

The Ridings care home in Banbury has offered advice for the elderly, particularly those living alone.

Bicester Vets has advised people to keep a close eye on their pets, especially furry animals.

The Ridings manager Karen Kyme said: “We recommend older people stay hydrated and keep out of the sunlight as much as possible.

"In these temperatures it’s important to avoid caffeinated drinks as they are dehydrating. Drink plenty of cold fluids like water and fruit juices.

“Try to avoid hot meals where possible and instead eat salads and fruit, as these foods are water based so will help you stay hydrated.”

Bicester Vets said dogs should not be left in hot cars, even for a short amount of time and that people should leave plenty of water around for their pets to drink.

The surgery said small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits can be given cold water or even ice and lots of shade is advisable.
