The number of sex crimes reported to police in Oxfordshire rose by 22 per cent in the last year, new figures have revealed.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales figures, released by the Office for National Statistics, showed the rise despite an overall 5.4 per cent drop in reported crime between July 2013 and June 2014.

There were 766 sexual offences reported to police across the county in the last year compared to 628 in the previous 12 months. Oxford saw the highest rise in the county, with 263 sexual offences reported in the last year compared to 188 between 2012 and 2013 – a rise of 39.8 per cent.

Nationally there was a rise in reported sexual offences of 21 per cent, one point lower than the figure for Oxfordshire.
