INVESTIGATIONS into why 30 women had to be recalled over fears about inaccurate breast cancer tests are ongoing, the Oxford University Hospitals Trust said.
Interim medical director Tony Berendt said at the trust board meeting this week: “Patients have almost all completed their assessments and we are continuing with our internal investigation. I’m confident we are able to ensure patient safety through the whole of these services.”
As revealed in the Oxford Mail, the trust launched a serious incident investigation after it discovered five women had developed breast cancer several months after they had screenings and additional assessments.
After these cases came to light, 626 women, who had been screened and then had additional tests by the same doctor between May 2011 and March 2014, were reviewed by National Breast Screening Service experts.
Out of those, 30 women were called back to be retested. It is not yet known if any of them needed additional treatment.
