HMV set to call in administrators

RECORD store giant HMV is expected to call in the administrators tomorrow morning.

The news comes after hours of rescue talks with lenders, and after a massive blue cross sale was launched by the company, seen as a last-ditch move to try to generate revenue.

It is not yet known how HMV stores in Oxford’s Cornmarket Street and in Banbury will be affected. The firm has more than 200 outlets and more than 4,000 employees.

It comes hot on the heels of last week’s announcement that camera retailer Jessops was going into administration.

I heard back in June that HMV were going to fail. During a street party for the Queens Jubilee, I got talking to an employee of HMV.Whilst telling me how bad things were there, he said that if I had any HMV vouchers that I "should spend them sooner, rather than Later".

Yeah I had dozens which I spent a year or so ago. HMV has been on the brink for a couple of years now. It's no surprise what's happened but it's very sad.

The HMV Oxford store would be a perfect site for their principal lender, Lloyds Banking Group. I've been told that their Halifax brand have been looking for an alternative to the current Westgate site for many years.

A Waitrose would be nice, but we'll end up with a coffee or mobile phone shop.
