New help for early babies
11:00am Saturday 29th September 2012 in Oxford
A pioneering initiative devised at the John Radcliffe Hospital ’s newborn intensive care unit is helping to get premature babies home earlier.
Babies born early have problems with co-ordinating sucking and swallowing so are fed through a nasal tube until they can manage on their own. Parents at the JR have been taught how to use a feeding tube so they can leave hospital earlier.
The pilot scheme is for babies born at 28 to 34 weeks who are well.
