'Head followed right procedures after allegations'

EDUCATION bosses last night said the correct procedures had been followed in the case of a teacher jailed for having an affair with a pupil.

Assistant headmaster Adam Williams, who worked at an Oxfordshire school, had a sexual fling with a schoolboy and was jailed for two years after a jury convicted him of eight charges.

The investigation was sparked after a parent contacted police to raise concerns.

A spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council said: “On receipt of the allegations, the headteacher of the school immediately followed the agreed procedures for these types of allegations.

“The member of staff was suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation, and has not been allowed to return to the school since.

“It is worth noting that the member of staff involved had been recruited according to the safe recruitment procedures, which included undergoing an enhanced criminal record bureau check. “No previous concerns had been raised about this individual during his time at the school.”

Jurors returned guilty verdicts on seven counts of sexual activity with a child by an adult in a position of trust and one of being a person in a position of trust inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Williams, 35, of Ruardean Walk, Cheltenham, will also have to sign on to the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and be placed on the Safeguarding Vulnerable People register.
