Estate gets new bus link to the rail station

RESIDENTS have welcomed the extension of a popular bus service to Oxford railway station.

The number three bus, which runs between Rose Hill and Oxford city centre, will finish at its new destination from Sunday, September 30, on all journeys. The final stop was at Speedwell Street, which meant passengers had to walk or get a connecting bus to the train station.

All Buses run by Stagecoach will also become double deckers.

Vim Rodrigo, 80, who lives in Rose Hill, said: “We used to have a bus that went to the station, so it is nice to see it is going to be returned.

“I know a lot of people complained. The bus would drop people off and you would have to get another bus to the station.

“There are quite a lot of elderly people in Rose Hill, so this is good news.”

Buses towards Rose Hill operated both by Stagecoach and Oxford Bus Company will depart from stop R1 at the station, stop R7 at Frideswide Square and stop D1 in New Road in addition to the usual stop in Bonn Square.

Buses towards the station will stop roughly opposite the new stops.

There will be minor changes to the timetable to accommodate the extended route, but the nightbus N3 will continue to run from Bonn Square unchanged.

Robyn North, marketing manager for Stagecoach Oxfordshire, said: “We have extended the route to provide better connections from the Iffley Road area and also changed them to double decker buses to provide more room.”

She added that the changes were being made in response from passengers and that bus fares on the route would not be affected.

There will be changes to other routes from September 30.

Routes 14/14A and 17A/17C will move to stop R4 at the railway station.

On Friday and Saturday nights, a new late NS1 journey from Witney to Oxford will be introduced at 2.12am and the NS1 journeys leaving Oxford for Witney and Carterton will be altered slightly, running every 30 minutes from 1-3am, with the last bus at 3.15am.

On Sundays the S1 to and from Carterton will be altered to serve Shilton Park and Monahan Way towards Carterton and Manor Road in Brize Norton when leaving Carterton.

The Monday-Friday expresses on route S2 will now stop to pick up at all stops in Oxford, and will run directly to and from Carterton instead of running through Witney.

Crazy that a large estate such as Rose Hill (and the many residents on the route) does not have a bus route to the station already. I hope that Stagecoach do a better job than Oxford Bus Co. to match the bus arrival times at the station with the train departure times.

I am puzzled by your comment about matching bus and train times. With buses every 10-20 mins as they were, and usually more frequent than any particular train service, how could they match them better? People want different train services, some want to the fast Londons, some want the stoppers, some want the XC service to the south coast and some want the XC to Birmingham. Some people want to leg it for their train, some people want a few mins to buy tickets and food. You can't cater specifically for all of them, but providing a frequent service means everyone who leaves enough time will get their train.

If either or both the X39/X40 routed out of Oxford via the Iffley Road and Littlemore/Sandford - it would give many people in East Oxford (and the Science Park via pedestrian route) direct access to Reading/Reading Station too.

I wouldn't recommend much less than 15 mins for a bus/rail interchange, to allow for traffic delays on the bus route, long queues at the ticket desks, etc.

You're pretty lucky to have a frequent direct station link again, in my part of the world direct station buses are every 20 mins and the Ban Rd corridor north of Marston Ferry Rd gets none!

Perhaps I haven't been explicit. I can only get the buses as scheduled - every 20 minutes. If it was possible to get a bus 8-10 minutes earlier I would do so. I don't live at Rose Hill or on the RH route hence my original comment.

Thank you for your constructive comments. Where do I claim that buses only exist for me?

The bus does not run every 7/8 minutes where I live so I can not catch an earlier bus - as stated above. I don't know why you do not have the capacity to understand this. I have to use taxis because of the scheduling but would rather pay a bus fare than the cost of the taxi.

BTW at the time I get the train the newsagent at the station isn't open (too early).

I do wonder why people post drivel such as yours and resort to insults.
