OXFORD City Council will be spending more than £200,000 buying electric vehicles over the next four years.

The council has already bought two electric Citroen cars and expects to replace up to nine cars and vans with electric vehicles during this financial year, with a further five the next.

The new spend was approved last week by the council’s executive board after a report presented to councillors said the change would result in a “significant positive impact on the local environment”.

At the moment the council’s diesel cars, which are earmarked for replacement, emit 1.3 tonnes of CO2 each year.

While the electric vehicles will be more expensive to buy, the council expects them to have lower running costs.

Since 2001 the city council has added 180 hybrid cars and small commercial vehicles to its fleet and five electric Minis were trialled by the council in 2009.

The council expects to purchase more Citroen C-Zeros as they offer the “best value”.
