THREE bishops in Oxford and hundreds of school pupils in Wallingford celebrated Pancake Day yesterday.

The Bishops of Oxford, Dorchester and Reading served free pancakes to passing shoppers outside St Michael at the North Gate church in Cornmarket Street.

The Rt Rev John Pritchard, Bishop of Oxford, said: “I enjoyed meeting shoppers and serving pancakes. The three of us competed to see who was the best cook – and who could flip a pancake.”

And about 200 primary school pupils in Wallingford wore fancy dress and took part in races through the town’s Market Place.

The pancake race featured pupils from St John’s Primary School, St Nicholas Infants School and Fir Tree Junior School.

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the last day before the Christian season of Lent, which begins today, Ash Wednesday.
