The location of diversion signs in Headington will be reviewed because they are causing cyclists to swerve.

Oxfordshire County Council has pledged to look where signs are located during roadworks in London Road.

It follows complaints that some were put in cycle lanes along London Road and were causing problems for cyclists.

County councillor Roz Smith, left, said: “I have nearly collided into one of them and there have been a few complaints about it.

“Putting diversion signs in the way of cyclists and pedestrians does seem to be something that happens quite often.”

The work form part of the £450,000 New Headington Transport Improvements scheme which aims to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

James Styring, right, of cycling campaign group Cyclox said: “It is an irony that the work is to make the streets more accommodating for cyclists.”

County council spokesman Owen Morton said: “We appreciate the diversion signs may be causing some inconvenience for cyclists.

“We will look into whether they can be better positioned while still fully visible to motorists. We are striving to keep disruption to a minimum and look forward to providing a much improved environment for cyclists and pedestrians in the area.”
