YELLOW was the colour of the day as thousands of Oxford United supporters packed the Kassam Stadium for the club’s annual open day.

The sun shone as more than 2,000 fans were introduced to new players, given tours of the ground and, most importantly, saw the team’s new kit on Saturday.

Enjoying himself with daughters Daisy, 11, and Emily, seven, was life-long supporter Tony Stoyle, of Radley. The 45-year-old said: “The new shirt is really nice, I know everyone was against the stripes last year.

“But it feels nice and there’s a lot more yellow in it, which is great. And you’ve still got the blue.

“I used to go to United games in the legendary 1980s and it’s nice to get the family involved again. There’s a real feel-good factor about the club.”

The fans watched as the first team, including the new signings Michael Duberry and Tony Capaldi, were put through their paces in a training session.

The fans queued to have their photos taken with the players and club mascot Olly the Ox.

Olly, also known as Nick Penfold, was there with his son Connor, 15 and friend Elliot Wilkins, 15.

He said: “I’ve supported Oxford all my life and I must admit I like the shirt more yellow than blue. But I hope they keep it for two seasons this time. Buying a shirt every year for £40 is a lot of money, especially for families with three or four kids.”

Hundreds of young fans were able to play against their heroes in a giant football match. Among them was Ollie Knights, four, of Abingdon. His dad Pete said: “He loved it, he had a great time. We all have, it’s been a really nice day.”

And Kevin Jakeman, 40, of Lechlade was enjoying the sun with five-year-old daughter Lillia. He said: “I’ve been a fan since the early 1980s and now Lillia is too. She had absolutely no choice in the matter, obviously. She was born in Swindon and there was no way she was going to be red.”

Miss Oxford, Kirsty Beer, modelled the new kit on one of the first public events of her reign.

The 21-year-old said: “I’m absolutely loving it, the atmosphere is fantastic.

“It’s brilliant because there’s so many people.”

She added: “I’d definitely consider myself a United supporter.”

Club chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “It’s been a fantastic day, the turn-out was amazing so we’re really pleased.

“Now we just have to make sure we make a positive start to next season, go at it and take on the competition.”
