TODAY the Oxford Mail can unveil the dozens of county charities who have won a slice of £50,000 in Comic Relief cash.

We teamed up last month with Comic Relief to offer organisations the chance to get their hands on the money to mark Red Nose Day.

More than 100 charities applied for grants of between £500 and £1,000 and now we reveal the 67 groups that were successful.

Oxford Mail deputy editor Sara Taylor said: “We had some really fantastic groups that applied this year.

“It was a unique opportunity for us to offer a helping hand in what are difficult times for small organisations in Oxfordshire.

“And we are over the moon to be able to give out the £50,000 to all these organisations.”

Among the winners are toddlers’ groups, good neighbour schemes, playgroups and clubs for the widowed.

There are also music clubs, rugby players, groups for Brownies, baking and badminton.

Wally Cox, grants manager for the Oxfordshire Community Foundation, which will be distributing the money, said: “It has been a really exciting time and I am delighted that so many groups came forward for the money.

“We had such a great spread of groups.

“They came from right across the county, there was a real mix of organisations and we had charities, large and small.

“It has been a really good use of the money, so I am looking forward to seeing all the projects benefit.”

Chinnor Village Hall was one of the winners and treasurer Pat Andrews explained how its £802 grant would help She said: “It might not sound terribly exciting, but it will make a big difference to us.”

The hall was refurbished last year and although the villagers raised enough money for tables, they still needed £3,000 for 150 new chairs.

Mrs Andrews, 64, said: “This money will allow us to buy more than 70 chairs, so we were thrilled to get so much.

“The hall is the centre of this community, the nursery meets here, we have quiz nights, musical theatre and ballroom dancing.”

The Oxford Mail will be featuring other winners throughout the week until Saturday.
