Hospice plea to helpers in Summertown

VOLUNTEERS are needed to work at a charity shop raising funds for an Oxford hospice for children and young people.

Sir Roger Bannister and his wife Lady Bannister opened the new Helen and Douglas House shop at 268 Banbury Road, Summertown, on Wednesday.

They cut the ribbon alongside the hospice’s founder Sister Frances Dominica.

David Cryer, head of retail for the hospice, which is based in Leopold Street, in East Oxford, said: “About 100 people turned up for the opening and people have brought in lots of donations.

“We have two part-time managers but we only have four volunteers so far and we need at least 20 to be able to run the store properly.

“It would be great if people from Summertown or further afield could come in and help out.”

The shop is the 30th the charity has opened in the region since the first store opened in Oxford’s Covered Market in 2003.

The second store followed in Abingdon in 2006, with a Wantage shop opening in 2007.

The chain of charity shops now spreads across five counties and raises £500,000 for Helen and Douglas House every year. The new shop will sell clothing, books and bric-a-brac.
