Seven people were arrested following a pitch invasion at the end of United's defeat by Leyton Orient.

Mounted police officers were used to herd fans back into the stands after trouble flared when United were relegated.

Officers were also called to push Orient fans back off the pitch and into their stand after an Oxford United fan appeared to run towards them after the final whistle.

Adam Fisher, a spokesman for Thames Valley Police, said seven fans were arrested following the pitch invasion.

He could not say how many were Oxford United fans, but added: "Six out of the seven have been charged with pitch invasion and have been bailed to appear before Oxford magistrates on May 15.

"The other man has not been charged and has been released on police bail."

Mr Fisher added one other person was arrested for a public order offence inside the stadium and was issued with a fixed penalty notice.

If convicted, those charged with invading the pitch face lengthy bans and risk being barred from travelling to Germany for the World Cup this summer.

Police had also been called to help stewards cool tensions between rival fans at the start of the game.

There had been a strong police presence in the build-up to the match with officers on bikes, horses, in cars and on foot surrounding the Kassam Stadium.

Police had also carried out patrols at Oxford railway station.
