Youngster needs £35k spine op

A LITTLE girl needs thousands of pounds of corrective surgery to mend a spinal condition that could prove fatal if left untreated.

Gulshat Kadyrova was born without hip sockets and came with her mother from poverty-striken Turkmenistan in January 2006 for a hip operation at Oxford’s Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

Thanks to generous Oxford Mail readers, £15,000 was raised to pay for it, but doctors soon discovered she had scoliosis – a curvature of the spine – which could crush her organs if it is not corrected.

The nine-year-old, who is known as Lily, is forced to wear braces around-the-clock to stop her spine moving, but doctors say within two years she will need an operation, which could cost £35,000, to permanently correct her condition.

Gulshat and her mother first came to Oxford in 2006 for treatment at the Nuffield. A specialist diagnosed that she had curvature of the spine and recommended immediate corrective treatment.

The medical treatment is not available on the NHS and has been funded by private donations from around the world.

Because Gulshat’s mother Bahar Kadyrova is unable to work in the UK and they have to return to Turkmenistan every six months for visa requirements, the operation is not available on the NHS.

Family friend Jennie de Vries, organiser of the Gulshat Fund which was set up three years ago, said: “Her spine is like an S shape but it also twists like a corkscrew.

“If we don’t have enough money for the operation she will have to go home because the visa only lets her stay until the operation.

“She would have to stop wearing the brace because there would be no one to adjust it. The curve in her spine will increase quickly and will cause her internal organs to be crushed, so it’s imperative we do the operation otherwise her life could potentially be in danger.”

Her mother Bahar Kadyrova, 34, of Hurst Lane, Cumnor Hill, said: “I really want her to be without the braces and with a straight back, but we have to be patient and do what the doctors say.

“I have no choice, we just have to carry on. It gets very frustrating when I see all the other children do what she can’t and when she explains to me what they are doing it breaks my heart.”

A variety concert by the Christian Music Fellowship Choir is being held tonight at St Clement’s Family Centre in Cross Street to raise money for the operation.

Gulshat, a pupil at Cumnor Primary School, will perform at the event – the same song and dance she performed in December at a pantomime festival in Cumnor.

Ms Kadyrova said: “It’s very helpful for us and I’m happy to know that people do care about us.”

Claire Fullalove, 67, of St Clement’s, Oxford, who started the fundraising appeal three years ago, is hoping businesses will donate.

Ms Kadyrova, who cannot work in the UK for legal reasons, sold all her possessions and put her life on hold in the search for treatment for her daughter. She plans to return Turkmenistan as soon as Gulshat is cured.

Tickets for tonight’s concert, including refreshments, are £5 for adults and £3.50 for children and pensioners and are available on the door or on 01865 427837.

What a shame that young British kids are dying, but we here of no appeals for money from the O.M. Is this another relative of an O.M. reporter. It seems like when every Tom, Dick and Abdul comes here with a sob story they get all the publicity they want. But if you are British and dying, well that doesn't sell papers does it?.

Then why come to England, whats wrong with Russia, France, Spain,Italy, Germany. Oh yes they would make her pay, but not good old England, just come here with any sob story and we will fund it at our expense. How is she able to get a visa every time?? She is only coming here to get free treatment, no wonder the HNS is in the condition it is in now.

Before embarking on your rant, read the article! She is NOT getting free treatment - it has to be paid for. And if I and other caring individuals chose to contribute, that is our decison. It does not impact on the NHS - in fact, it probably benefits the NHS because, if operations are carried out at NHS hospitals, the NHS will make a profit from the charges for medical care.

And who is saying that other people don't go to other countries for treatment of conditons not available in their own country?

And a girl born without hips and with a life threatening curvature of the spine is definitley NOT "a sob story".

If she has not got a job how is she paying for the house she is staying in and living expenses while she is here?? Scrounging of us thats how.
I expect others do go to other countries for treatment but they have the money to do so, they don't go to the local paper with a sob story and expect locals to pay for it.

Neither you nor I have any idea who is paying for her expenses while she and her mother are living here. But your assumption that she is "scrounging of us" displays amazing ignorance - as does your assumption that "others (who) go to other countries.... have the money to do so".

There are many individuals worldwide who receive care for a whole variety of ills entirely because of the philanthropy of caring individuals in caring societies.

But why should you or any one else be concerned that a young girl is receiving treatment as a result of the invitation and fund raising of a group of concerned individuals? Do you think that any of us should only receive help if we can pay for it? Would you advocat a US style welfare/health system - primarily available only to the rich?
No - the real objections here are, frist, that she is not British, second, an incorrect assumption that she is a drain on the NHS and, third, an incorrect assumption (possibly) that her housing is being paid for "by us".

The article said she sold her belongings, so she's probably paying for her rent with her savings if she can't work.

If you don't want to donate, then don't bother, but how about keeping your petty comments to yourself.

I personally won't donate, as I give to other charities, but I'm sure there are many people out there who would love to donate to this cause.

The innocent women and children mutilated by British bombs in Afghanistan should also be brought here for treatment.

Smegma, and Penny. She IS not contributing to our system, She IS taking from it. As a non E.U. citizen the VISA fees alone will run into £1000s, which I am sure have not been paid. If she sold all of her possesions, (which will be worth pennies. If they were worth anything then this sob story would not be reported)where is she going back to? No let me guess political asylum once she has got what she wants. It is a shame that the 2 of you named above don't care about your fellow countrymen, yet seem to have bleeding hearts for all of the worlds flotsam and jetsam. Maybe you should go to sangette and pick the remnants out of THE JUNGLE and invite them into your own home. Good idea. I have a mate with a truck, how many do you want?

Got any more assumptions while you're at it!?

I would imagine she's here because the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is world class and able to perform pioneering operations. Plenty of people from this country raise money to go to the US for operations that are not available here. Any decent person from any country will do whatever is necessary to help their sick child. I'm heartened to see a mother prepared to lose everything for the sake of her daughter. The very best of luck to them both.

I am disgusted at some of the heartless comments here, some commentors here are seemingly sub-human... My only regret here is that the taxes I pay are not paying for this little girls operation...I would much rather they were used for this girl's operation than on council estate (english) scroungers, having a 3rd kid from a 3rd man...The human value of compassion should have no borders, nationality or religion. Best of luck to Gulshat and her family....
