An Oxford woman has been diagnosed with swine flu.

The 29-year-old has recently returned from the USA and today doctors confirmed she was the second person in Oxford to have contracted the disease.

Oxfordshire's director of public heath Dr Jonathan McWilliam said: "The woman is being treated with anti-viral drugs and is making a good recovery.

"She has recently returned from a trip to the USA.

"Close contacts of the woman are also being given anti-viral drugs as a precaution.

"We would like to reassure members of the public that levels of this disease in the country are still low.

"Symptoms of influenza A (H1N1) are similar to those of seasonal influenza, usually a feverish illness accompanied by one, or more, of cough, sore throat, headache and muscle aches."

Last month a six-year-old girl who went to Sandhills Primary School contracted swine flu while on a family holiday to Mexico.

She has fully recovered.

There have been 133 cases in the UK.

Dr McWilliam said anyone who had flu-like symptoms and has recently returned from Mexico or the USA, or been with someone who has, to stay at home, to limit contact with others and contact your GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

They should also not go into your GP surgery, or to a hospital, as they may spread germs to others, he said.

There habe been 12,022 cases internationally and 86 deaths.
