Homeless shelter opens 'safer' yard for drinkers

A DRINKING and smoking garden has been built at a city homeless shelter in a bid to tackle antisocial behaviour.

The Oxford Night Shelter has created a yard at its Luther Street base for the homeless to drink and smoke off the streets.

Eight years ago, the shelter introduced a ‘wet room’ – an area where alcohol is allowed.

But the smoking ban – introduced in July 2007 – meant users were forced to go outside into a designated no-drinking zone if they wanted to smoke, and antisocial behaviour became a problem.

Now a walled area with benches, ashtrays and outside lights, which is big enough for about 20 people, has been completed.

Night Shelter director Lesley Dewhurst said many of the people who stood outside the entrance to the shelter were either banned from the centre, or not even homeless.

She said: “It can be quite intimidating for people to walk past, including our service users.

“There is antisocial behaviour going on out there – bullying, drug pushing.

“This is our way of saying ‘look this is what we have done to try to tackle the problem’, and anyone caught out there drinking can be moved on by the police.”

The centre used part of a £100,000 Government hostel improvement grant to build the yard and make improvements to its reception area, which managers and users worked together to design.

Last month, the Oxford Mail reported how people at the Night Shelter claimed they had moved into tents in fields around the city because of bullying, drinking and drug use at the centre.

But George Harper, who has been at the shelter for about six months, said: “Their claims were a complete and utter crock of rubbish.

“There are lots of different people, from lots of different backgrounds and ethnic groups living in here – you are going to get a difference in opinion from time to time.”

Another service user, who did not wish to be named, added: “Mainly it’s the people outside who cause the most trouble.

“The yard will be a good thing because it will be obvious who is and who is not supposed to be there.”

Iain McDiarmid, a training and education officer at the shelter, said the garden would only be accessible through the front reception.

He added: “There is a fire door for emergencies, but other than that we have complete control of who can access the yard.”

The Night Shelter said it would take firm action against those flouting the rules, and would consider banning anyone from the centre who is caught drinking in the street outside.

Ms Dewhurst added: “It now means that anyone using this building has no reason to be out there.

“If you are caught out there you suffer the consequences.”

Oh great. So if someone is caught drinking in the street, they get banned from the centre, leaving them to drink where? On the street - and the general public have to suffer the consequences.

Honestly. The people who run this place should THINK a little more...

Oxford is a mecca for the homeless, the work shy, and the drug and alcohol addled. They are welcome here, but ONLY if they GET A JOB like the rest of us.

I am sick of seeing a Big Issue seller on every street corner in the city, they can clearly all get a job. I saw one (the one who always says Bonjour) in a very nice suit a while back. So he's not poor, is he?

EB..Are you really thick as you sound?? Where are these jobs that you say are so easily to get??? With nearly three million unemployed and getting larger do you really think these uneducated people are going to get a job? Please tell me as my son has been out of work since January and can not even get an interview despite sending loads of application forms off.

Bart-this may come as a shock to you and I'm sure you're a sensitive soul but most of the people in the Night Shelter haven't worked for years. Your son presumably is used to work, has friends, washes, does not howl up and down St Aldates , does not stride round the city all day with staring eyes. These are some of the reasons why he'll get a job and all our friends from Durham and Liverpool, Glasgow, you name it, they're all in the NS, will never get a job.

There are PLENTY of jobs out there - just not ones you might want to take.

If it came to it, I'd do any job to pay the bills and keep a roof over my head. Even if it meant working 20 hour days,
because I have PRIDE and I won't take a penny in benefits whilst I have the ability to go and work.

Take a stroll around Oxford or look at the job pages on this very website, and tell me there aren't any jobs...

Eb..so you would take a job on at £4.20 per and work 20 hours a day! (be sensible if your are going to debate this) and expect that to pay all your bills and you will not claim any benifits. You sure your not the one on drink and drugs???

close the place down and send them to work in salt mines!failing that give them all a nice new new house,£20000 a year to spend.either way will kill 'em off within a couple of years.

Given that 4.20 is below the minimum wage, any employer doing so would be breaking the law.

Take my advice and look at the job pages. There are over 500 vacancies within a 20 mile radius of Oxford on this website alone.

So as I said, I'd do what was needed - I'm not work shy unlike many scroungers...and maybe you too?

You're right. It's all about pride, cut the benefits and hand outs and let them get off their backsides. You could log onto daily info and see 100 jobs ready to start asap. Jokers. Give them a brush and make them work, sweep cornmarket for starters

You lot really should get out more rather than leaving daft comments. I used to graft my arse off alot harder than you could imagine and earnt good dollar. Then it all went wrtong and turned to the drink and the drugs. Now im CLEAN thanks to their support so will EB or that idiot tanchris help me get a job, housing, and support. Selling the issue is a legitamate way of earning money unlike the crack heads of the leys rosehill barton etc etc who rob houses at night.
Pop down and have a look but please introduce yourselves as your screen names..........
