Mail investigation exposes post delays again

More than a third of first class post arrived late in an Oxford Mail investigation into Royal Mail’s service.

Tests by the paper showed just 65 per cent of first class letters achieved the company’s next day delivery standard – compared to its target of 93 per cent.

It is a worse result than last year’s test by the Oxford Mail, when 80 per cent of psot arrived on time.

Last night customers said they were disappointed but not surprised at the results. And they fear the service will deteriorate when the city’s mail will be sorted in Swindon.

But Royal Mail dismissed the survey as unscientific and said its own tests showed 92 per cent of first class mail arrived on time.

The Oxford Mail arranged for 55 letters to be sent to its Osney Mead offices from around the city, county and the rest of the UK on Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13.

Thirty-six letters arrived the next day, 11 arrived within two days, and the final eight were received three days after they were first posted.

Only 62 per cent of post sent from within Oxfordshire arrived on time.

Post from outside the county proved slightly more reliable with a next-day delivery rate of 68 per cent.

Robert Pineiro, marketing manager at Critchleys accountants in Paradise Square, Oxford, said: “We’ve had wet and damaged post which we told Royal Mail about last year and we’ve heard nothing back since.

“We’ve also had incorrect delivery of mail, which again they said they were looking into and again we’ve heard nothing back.

“We often get late post which put us at risk of fines from HM Revenue and Customs.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “It is difficult to rely on such a small sample, which is why Royal Mail spends more than £5m a year and sends more than 100,000 test letters a month to provide a statistically representative picture of our performance.

“Our quality of service results are independently researched on Royal Mail’s behalf, and the validity and accuracy of the quality of service data are accepted by Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services in the UK.”

Diana Gough, 66, from Mill Street, Eynsham, whose late husband Desmond worked for the Royal Mail for 42 years, said she was unsurprised by the Oxford Mail’s findings.

She said: “You never know when the post is going to come. Some days it’s 9am, sometimes it’s 12pm.”

In June, Oxford’s sorting office in Garsington Road, Cowley, will close and transfer to Swindon.

Royal Mail claimed the move will improve services in Oxford.

Mrs Gough said: “The move to Swindon will make things so much worse.

“You only have to look at the traffic some mornings to know that.”

City councillor Patrick Murray has been contacted by Royal Mail customers in Barton Road Flats, Headington, who have complained about the service.

He said: “Some people have been left waiting for weeks for letters, and I know one resident has never got some of the packages he ordered off the Internet.”

Royal Mail has talks with Oxford City Council about changing an automatic time lock on the doors of the flats.

Nigel Woods, from Consumer Focus, which replaced Royal Mail pressure group Postwatch in October, encouraged customers to claim compensation and added: “Delayed mail is annoying, and in some cases can cause distress.”

“Compensation payments and poor complaint figures generally will be an additional incentive for Royal Mail to minimise delayed mail and improve their standards.”

It could be of course that the Service will improve once some of the rebellious staff at Cowley are taken out of the equation! Traffic on the A420 during the time the post will be travelling on the roads is minimal but who said it was going to travel by road?
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY DOOM DOOM AND GLOOM!!!!!!!!!
What has happened to optimism has it been squeezed out by NULAB? If so there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

Zimmer...I'm confused..what has the so called rebellious staff got to do with late post?? They are not on strike at the moment and the post is still late.It shows it is not the fault of the staff but the new working practice that the managemant has brought in, not to improve the service but just to make more money.Stop blaming the postmen and look for the real reasons this is still happening.

Personally, my experience of Posties is first class (ha ha). Seriously! My business relies on the service and I have nothing but admirition for postal workers. Management, and this Government, however, is a different kettle of fish. Crozier, the overpaid Post Office boss, ex sacked FA chief, should get the Alan Sugar treatment. For those, like the Oxford Mail, who criticise the delivery times, wait till it goes into TNT and private hands, then you'll understand what delays are!!

The postal service has deteriorated in the last few years whilst the cost to the customer has risen. This has got nothing to do with the staff it is solely down to management. Transferring the service to Swindon will not improve matters and neither will the privatisation. No wonder there is gloom and doom when we get a lesser service for higher costs.

I now have things ordered off the internet delivered to a friend's house. There is too much risk of post either going to another address (which frequently happens) or not arriving at all. The Royal Mail do not care - I cannot empthazise that enough. I complained and was told "We no longer have the monopoly on mail collection and deliveries, please check with the company who posted the letter". Deplorable.

Our post arrives at random times between 10am and 5pm, impossible to 'wait in' for it any more. Parcels are worse and the online redelivery service is clearly ignored by the local staff. Complaints take weeks even to get acknowledged.

Whose fault is this? The govts, for selling off the profitable parts, then insisting the unprofitable public service part run at a profit. Its impossible, and the results show.

Renationalise it please!

I'm not blaming the guys who deliver the mail ,the postie in the street, but the guys that have been lead astray by the likes of Cullen and his Ilk who have gone out of their way to be disruptive in the implementation of new working practices brought in by management to try and modernise the service. This is before the 'mail' gets into the hands of the guy's who deliver it. As far as I'm concerned I have never experience problems in receiving deliveries where I live which is served by the Kidlington Office the management of which fetched the mail from Cowley when they were on strike.

If Lord Mandelscums plan to part privatise the Royal Mail go ahead does any hope to see an improvement. I guess anyone buying into it will only want a bit more of the 'cherry pie' that EU libralisation and the regulator Postcomm has given them. ie win all the lucrative contracts then force RM to deliver it for them..funny cause its true. EU legislation limits RM lorries to travel no faster than 56 mph..then moan that mail takes longer to arrive.Slower lorries mean mail arrives in delivery offices later..so postman start at 6.30 instead of previouslly 4.30. In a Utopia a postman would deliver to just 50 houses but the reallity is nearer 700 in many cases...so not everyone can recieve it first. Happy days.

I don't really mind when it arrives but I do object to the post being damaged by the moron who insists on screwing it up before leaving it hanging out of the letterbox for anyone to steal.
