It's in the lap of the gods

A nightclub has sparked outrage after applying to run lapdancing nights just yards from one of Oxford’s busiest churches.

Managers at Thirst Lodge, in Penny Farthing Street, face opposition from neighbours at St Ebbe’s Church – and worshippers are furious after learning that the period when the public could comment on the lapdance proposals had passed without them being made aware of the plan.

The club’s managers have insisted any lapdancing will be in accordance with licensing conditions.

They would not say how often Thirst Lodge planned to host lapdancing nights.

But Mark Abraham, church manager at St Ebbe’s, said: “We have so many people coming to our church, including young people, who attend during the evenings all through the week.

"Having them right next to a lapdancing club is one thing, but we are also worried about the type of people it will attract.

"It would be 20 feet from our front door.

“But it is not only the fact that it is so close to a church.

A lapdancing club would damage the good name of Oxford.

"We don’t want this in any form at all.”

Thirst Lodge has asked Oxford City Council whether it can change its licence to allow the performance of dance and music, but does not specify ‘lapdancing’.

Alistair Thompson, director of Thirst Lodge, said: “Following the submission of an application to run a lapdancing venue, we will be seeking to meet all licensing objectives.”

There is no legal requirement to inform local residents or businesses, other than to put a note outside the premises and advertise in a local newspaper.

The church estimates it attracts 1,000 people every week, including for several Sunday services, and social events for children under 10 and teenagers during weekday evenings.

Rector Vaughan Roberts said: “We at St Ebbes Church are confident that the vast majority or citizens of Oxford would share our view that this proposed club is not only unacceptable next to our building but anywhere in our city and that very strong opposition to the application would have been expressed if it had been known to the public.”

The period public consultation ended last Monday.

A lapdancing and pole dancing night held at Bar Baby, in Cowley Road, stopped in 2007.

There are two other lapdancing clubs in Oxfordshire, St James’ Gentleman’s Club in Banbury, and Diamonds and Pearls, which opens in Henley this weekend.

Margaret Coombs, of Divinity Road, who campaigned against the lapdancing in Cowley Road, said: “Lapdancing is degrading to women and undesirable. “I don’t think they are a good thing and can lead to disturbances outside.”

Oxford City Council is holding a licensing hearing at Oxford Town Hall on Thursday, from 5pm. matt.wilkinson@oxfordmail.co.uk

I find the "shock" quite entertaining. If any of the worshippers had bothered to take an interest in the local affairs rather than bothering their god then they would have been aware of the situation.

Oxford is a small city. People even shop next to the church on a Sunday! Residents who live close to the church might even be engaging in torrid **** in their bedrooms (or elsewhere) when sermons are taking place.

If residents don't want "filth" in Oxford - start with a bucket of soapy water and scrubbing brush and head to the Westgate carpark. It will be time well spent.

This is a joke, another sign that Christians are hypocritical, whatever happened to turning the other cheek.

Also the quote "we are worried what type of people it will bring" is a shocking thing to say from someone involved in a church. Now I was led to believe that God loved anyone and everyone, but clearly that doesn't have to apply to people who go to lapdancing clubs. They will clearly be cast out into the wilderness and i'm sure that I will be joining them after writing this.

Also I would like to see some evidence for Mrs Nimby of Divinity Road's claim that Lapdancing leads to disturbances outside clubs, I think she may struggle to find it. Thirst Lodge is well run and needs to find a USP as it is tucked away in it's own little corner. Or would the church just like to see it closed and boarded up like Bar Med has been for the last 2 or 3 years. The area would be become even more run down and attract more wino's than it does now. Maybe if they care so much about the community and people of Oxford they should get out of their closeted little church and walk 10 yards to find people who really need some help.

The fact is that the church and christians are a vocal minority in this country and all the protests we hear about at the moment are the last breaths of a dying institution.

Lets face it "There is probably no god, so stop worrying and enjoy your life".

Religous freaks should only speak for themselves.

Personally, I'm not keen on the idea of lapdancing clubs in Oxford. That said, I think it would be wise for the members of St Ebbe's to consider St Paul's letters to the Corinthians, written to Christians in a city full of immorality. Perhaps it might make them see an opportunity here of reaching out to the wider community, rather than pharisaically turning in on themselves.

I see 'the christians' are copping one for sticking their necks on the line on this one? Firstly if you look many of institutions in Oxford and across the UK which have a positive influence on the community were started by christians secondly they are well within their legal rights to say what they are saying and to be honest they are probably right in what they are saying, I wonder if any of the people who have written above, were to have a strip club move next door to their home how they would feel about it? And lastly obviously the people who go to St Ebbes in Oxford are being vocal in their opposition to this strip bar but it will be christians like the christians in St Ebbes who pick up the pieces when the products of the nightlife culture i.e alcoholism, addiction, broken marriages, etc etc come to a head so whilst in your eagerness to critise people for voicing their opinon just remember people said the same thing about William Wilber-force about slavery and Martin Luther King about equal rights.

The Night Shelter is a little more damaging to the "good name" of Oxford. Ever tried to use the public lavatory in Speedwell Street?

I can see what the Thirst Lodge mgmt are looking for and good luck to them for sticking their necks out, but from a police point of view, its of the main drag and would cause problems. St ebbes isn't the nicest place at anytime of the day, Roger Bacon Lane, or needle alley as we call it, have a rethink thirst, st ebbes- get with the times, how long till oxford has a casino?
