Peres visit passes peacefully


The visit of IsraelI president Shimon Peres, right, to Oxford passed off without serious incident, police said yesterday.

About 100 protesters, above, took part in a demonstration organised by the university’s Arab Cultural Society against the visit of the Middle East country’s head of state, as he gave a lecture in the city on Tuesday evening.

Having visited Balliol College in the afternoon, the Nobel Peace Prize winner spoke on the theme of the Globalisation of Peace at the Sheldonian Theatre.

The lecture was attended by university students and members of staff.

Chf Insp Dave Parker, of Thames Valley Police, said: “Tuesday night’s operation, which covered the visit of President Peres to Balliol College and the Sheldonian Theatre, went well, with no serious issues.

“It was a joint Thames Valley Police and Oxford University operation, with the visit attracting about 100 protesters.

“Their lawful protest was facilitated in Catte Street and Broad Street and no arrests were made.”
