A PETITION created by the mother of Cowley hit-and-run victim Steven Wanna has been signed by almost 1,000 people within a month.

Sandy Mar created the online petition at the start of May to urge the city council’s housing department to think again about her application for a two-bedroom ground floor property so she can bring her son home.

Within a week it had 300 signatures and is now on track to reach a thousand, with more than 960 people already stating their support.

Comments posted on the page have encouraged the mother-of-two, with one person writing: "This hard working, caring mum deserves a property suitable for her and her son."

Ms Mar said the council agreeing her application would enable her to become a full-time carer for her 21-year-old son, who sustained horrific injuries in February 2017 after being hit by a car near Nuneham Courtenay after a night out celebrating for his birthday.

After being kept in a coma for three months to allow his body to heal, he has spent the past year in rehabilitation relearning how to walk and recovering from brain injuries. The former Abingdon and Witney College student is currently more than an hour away at a specialist facility in Northamptonshire.

According to Ms Mar, the council has denied her request due to her being unable to demonstrate a sufficient local connection.

Oxford City Council has previously said it will not comment on individual cases.
