A CITY councillor has shut down his Facebook page after he shared posts which his Labour group said were 'inappropriate'.

Oxford City Council and Labour group leader Susan Brown said she had been made aware of 'extremely disappointing' posts late on Thursday shared by Ben Lloyd-Shogbesan.

He was re-elected as a councillor for Lye Valley hours later, early on Friday morning. The content of the posts he shared is not clear.

Ms Brown said he has now been referred to the national party to see whether any further action needs to be taken.

She said: “This matter came to my attention late last week. These posts are extremely disappointing and I asked Councillor Lloyd-Shogbesan to remove them immediately from his social media account. He has done so and he has apologised for his actions.

"As Labour councillors, we came into politics to tackle prejudice, injustice and to celebrate diversity so we take these issues extremely seriously.

"Anti-Semitism or any form of discrimination has absolutely no place in the party."

Mr Lloyd-Shogbesan said: "I am very sorry for any offence my sharing of articles and videos on social media has caused to those who have accessed them.

"These posts do not reflect my views now and I apologise for having disseminated them and implicitly endorsed them. I am committed to fighting all forms of racism and discrimination."
