SUPERMAN, Dennis the Menace and Wonder Woman didn't let the recent freezing conditions put a stop to World Book Day celebrations.

The snow which covered the county meant both Glory Farm School and The Cooper School had to cancel their plans to mark World Book Day on March 1.

But countless characters and headstrong heroes combined forces to put on a big celebration with both schools just a few days later.

Children dressed up as their favourite book characters and headed in to lessons at Glory Farm School.

Students went all out to recreate some of the best looks of children's tales including Batman, Where's Wally and The Cat in the Hat.

Cooper School marketing manager, Della Paviour, said: "Due to the snow, World Book Day was more spread out than usual.

"This didn't deter anyone at Glory Farm School though, and children and staff did not disappoint as they excitedly arrived in a vast array of colourful costumes.

"Where's Wally was a very popular choice of costume, as well as a full suite of characters from the Harry Potter books.

"An extremely hairy Gandalf made everyone laugh and the children's enthusiasm for the books and characters they were portraying was infectious.

"Mrs Gibson also gave a fantastic World Book Day themed gathering, talking about the joy of sharing books and stories."

Pupils at the Cooper School in Bicester opted for aprons alongside their costumes for a Book Bake Off competition for secondary school children to enter book-themed bakes.

Prizewinners for the best cakes were awarded with a trip to Coles Bookstore in Bicester to chose their very own new book.

Ms Paviour added: "The Cooper School also delved into a hive of various literary-themed activities. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, swashbuckling pirates, Jane Eyre, The Goddess Athena, plus various witches and wizards from the Harry Potter world could be seen wandering the corridors and quads as teachers donned their finest fancy dress to transform into well-known literary characters."

Schoolchildren were also able to get their hands on new books with their free book tokens from a visiting pop up stall from Coles Bookstore, plus get stuck into a number of quizzes and scavenger hunts throughout the school.
