Members of the Oxford Emergency Committee for Afrin in Syria staged a protest vigil against the Turkish government's attack on the region.

Members of the committee held up banners in front of Martyrs' Memorial in St Giles for the protest at lunchtime.

They said it was 31 days since the Turkish government began its attack on Afrin in Syria.

Committee members added that 37 villages have been subjected to continuous shelling and bombing.

Rojeen Qaqu, spokesperson for the Oxford Emergency Committee for Afrin, said: "The medical authorities report that over 100 people have died and over 350 have been severely injured, some with life changing injuries.

"We are holding our vigil to highlight the suffering of the people of Afrin and to bear witness to all who have been killed and injured."

Committee members are calling for the United Nation's call for an immediate ceasefire in Syria, including Afrin to be implemented.

Ms Qaqu said the vigil 'honoured fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces who have lost their lives in the defence of Afrin'.

The Oxford Emergency Committee was set up by the Kurdish and Syrian community living in Oxford in response to the Turkish military invasion of Afrin on January 20.

A spokesman for the committee said it has discussed the latest situation in Afrin with Oxford East MP Anneliese Dodds.
