A TEENAGE boy has been left with serious injuries after being stabbed during a fight in Summertown.

The incident happened at around 9.45pm yesterday at the junction of Middle Way and Rogers Street.

A fight involving multiple people broke out and a 17-year-old boy suffered stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital - by a member of the public who police are trying to track down - with injuries to his neck and arm where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Forensic specialists and plain clothes police officers were at the scene for most of today and conducted door to door enquiries.

Val Carlill, who lives in Middle Way, said she was questioned by police.

She said: "It's really surprising and it seems somebody was quite badly hurt.

"We often used to have people coming out of the wine bar or restaurants late at night and young people sometimes gather but this sounds like an incident of major violence.

"It's not what you would expect here."

Andrew Gant, the leader of Oxford City Council's Liberal Democrat group, lives in Middle Way.

He said: "I'm trying to reassure local people and letting them know I'll be liaising with police and trying to find out what happened.

"I've lived here for 19 years and seen nothing remotely like this.

"Summertown is a suburb and, like anywhere else, it has its share of issues - but I don't think we've seen anything that's boiled over into this kind of violence - not in my time here."

No descriptions of offenders are available at this stage.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant David Whittle, from Oxford Force CID, said: “Detectives are working to investigate how the victim sustained serious injuries.

"As part of our enquiries, I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed an altercation in the area of Middle Way and Rogers Street at around 9.45pm on Thursday.

“If you saw or heard anything unusual or saw anyone running away from the area please come forward and report this information to police.

“I would also like to appeal to the person who took the victim to the John Radcliffe Hospital, as they may have information which could assist our investigation.

“People in the community may notice an increased police presence in the area. If you have any details, regardless of how insignificant you think they may be, please report this to an officer or call our enquiry centre.”
