AN OXFORD University worker suspended over alleged links to terrorism is no longer employed by the institution.

Last month the Oxford Mail exclusively revealed that the university had suspended a non-academic worker after material emerged online showing he had links to Islamic terrorism.

Yesterday the university said the worker in question was ‘no longer a university employee’.

The university did not confirm whether the worker was sacked or resigned.

In October, the university suspended the worker after it was revealed he had been arrested for terrorism offences and detained in Italy five years ago.

An operation by Italian authorities and the Cagliari State Police led to the arrest of the man as part of a wider investigation into Jihadi extremism.

Reports in the country at the time said he changed his name and wanted to travel to Afghanistan to 'join the war-fighting formations of the 'Holy War'.

It was alleged the worker was involved in spreading extremist material, although he denied committing an offence, and spent two-and-a-half years in a number of prisons.

The university said it immediately notified Thames Vally Police after learning about the alleged links.
