FAMILIES in Oxford's five tower blocks are being given the chance to develop their computer skills while their buildings undergo a facelift.

Fortem, the contractors for the £20m refurbishment works, is offering free 'Smart4Life' events to encourage tenants to further their understanding of digital technology.

Between now and Wednesday, March 29, a training van equipped with state-of-the-art technology will visit the tower blocks.

Mike Rowley, the council's board member for housing, said: "This is a great initiative by Fortem and an example of the social value contribution they’re making to our communities beyond the wonderful work they’re doing in repairing the tower blocks.

"If you would like to get some friendly assistance to improve your digital skills or learn the ropes from scratch, visit the van when it comes to a tower block near you."

Anyone living in the towers can join the sessions, regardless of their current ability level.

Those who visit can get advice on how to use the internet, set up and manage email accounts and attach documents, as well as sending emails.

There will also be tips on how to use Microsoft Word, creating a CV and searching for jobs online, as well as using mobile phone apps.

Mick Williamson, managing director at Fortem, said: "Supporting is at the heart of our business so we’re excited to have our Smart4Life vans in operation in Oxford.

"They’re a great way of promoting digital inclusion for people of all ages and have proved to be extremely helpful to residents at our branches across the country."

The van has already visited Evenlode and Windrush Towers in Blackbird Leys, with residents of Hockmore in Cowley encouraged to attend those events.

Foresters Tower in Wood Farm will be visited between 10am and 1pm next Tuesday with Plowman Tower in Northway hosting the van the following day at the same time.
