TWENTY-TWO selfless citizens were decorated for a combined 65 years volunteering at Oxfordshire care homes.

The volunteers from across the county were honoured at The Orders of St John Care Trust's Volunteers Day event in Didcot this month.

Six were being thanked for spending their first year helping out at Order of St John care homes, while one indefatigable faithful – Gladys Bird – was marking her 12th year lending a hand at the Westgate care home in Wallingford.

All of them received certificates for their ongoing dedication and commitment to older people living in care.

Head of volunteering Kit Lendon, who handed out the awards, said: "We consider our volunteers to be one of our biggest assets and really appreciate their willingness to give up their time for the benefit of our residents.

"We're extremely lucky to have such a selfless group of individuals willing to spend a bit of their spare time – from organising a day out or leading a weekly game of bingo to simply having a natter or lending a listening ear.

"We look forward to Volunteers Day every year because it's the perfect opportunity to thank these amazing people for all the time and effort they spend enriching our residents’ day-to-day lives."

Among those being honoured was Wantage resident Peter Humphrey who has volunteered at The Meadows in Didcot for the past five years.

Ms Lendon said: "A beloved personality within the home, Peter visits the home regularly, making tea and coffee, leading bingo and helping with activities and regional events, but most importantly, simply spending time with residents."

He and the 21 others picked up their certificates at Didcot Civic Hall on Thursday, October 6.

The trust's assistant operations director for Oxfordshire Patsy Just added: "Many people may not realise it, but an hour every week or two can make a tremendous difference in our residents’ lives, as it helps build a sense of community and encourages social inclusion within our homes.

"I think all of our volunteers would agree that spending time in our homes offers a fulfilling experience hard to find elsewhere, and we encourage even more of our neighbours to get involved."
