THE controversial junction at Hythe Bridge Street and George Street could be damaging the city's air quality, it has been claimed.

Measurements taken over the past five years showed that nitrogen dioxide levels had increased in George Street, Park End Street and Beaumont Street last year.

The junction, which has been described as dangerous for cyclists, has regularly caused tailbacks in the city since December 2014.

Levels in Hythe Bridge Street and Worcester Street had dropped in 2015 but city council board member for Environment said he "could not rule out" the possibility the junction changes had impacted on air quality.

City councillor for Jericho, Susanna Pressel had raised concerns over impact of the standing traffic on residents' health.

Mr Tanner promised that Walton Street would be included in air quality testing from 2017.
