A POLITICAL prankster crammed a phone box with home comforts and stuck up a to-let sign advertising it as a studio flat.

The mystery decorator pitched the sign above the phone box in Boundary Brook Road in Oxford, promoting a £1,195pcm rent that appeared to be a dig at David Cameron.

Advertised by Privilege Estates, using the Conservative's tree logo, it featured a fabricated quote from the Prime Minister which said: "Privilege always looked after me."

The Tardis-esque 'home' opened out to display a scrap of net curtain, a scenic painting, books including ones about Shakespeare and George Orwell, plus toiletries and a toothbrush.

Jovo Parojcic, who manages the Balkan Lodge Hotel in nearby Iffley Road, said the items appeared on Monday night.

He said: "I was cutting the hedge and noticed people standing there looking at something and taking photos.

"I think it's just a bit of a joke. I've been in Oxford for 20 years and have seen the phone box vandalised, but not like this."

Keith Cantwell, who lives in a flat opposite the phone box, was so outraged when the Oxford Mail told him about the renovation that he stripped the box's contents and chucked them in the bin.

The 61-year-old said: "It's a lot of trouble that somebody's gone through. We always have leaflets thrown in there but this is new to me. We have a lot of stuff dumped round here, especially over by the phone box. It's annoying when we try to keep this area clean. Someone's playing a prank - I do find it funny but we don't want rubbish in here."

Bizarrely the Oxford Mail's newsdesk phone number was printed on the to-let sign, while a copy of last Wednesday's paper, which had a special report on teachers struggling to afford to live in Oxford, was folded inside.
