PLANS for a new Aldi in Oxford will be submitted before the end of the year.

The discount supermarket chain wants to build its second shop in the city and is currently consulting residents to gauge public support.

The store would replace an existing Currys off Horspath Driftway and serve people on the Wood Farm and Lye Valley estates.

Leaflets have been delivered describing the German-based company's proposals.

It also wants feedback from people on where they currently do their main food shop and whether an Aldi would benefit them.

A spokeswoman said: "We propose to convert the existing Currys store at Horspath Driftway and add a small extension to create a new Aldi. It will have a sales area of 906 square metres and 55 parking spaces.

"The new store represents a multimillion pound investment in the area and will create up to 50 new jobs."

The store – renowned for its discounted prices – would provide strong competition for other supermarket chains in south-east Oxford.

The company said it would "actively seek" to recruit people from the surrounding area.

A planning application will be submitted to Oxford City Council before 2016.
