DRIVERS taking advantage of gaps in double yellow lines to use a busy main road in Bicester to park are in for a surprise – contractors will be paying a night time visit to join them up.

Motorists, above, started parking along London Road when it was closed for work on the rail crossing as part of the new Oxford/Bicester Village/London link.

But when Network Rail tried to repaint the double yellow lines cars were parked in the way and areas had to be left blank.

The Highway Code states drivers must not park on double yellow lines.

John Broad, of Langford Village Community Association, said motorists parking there were “causing chaos” because the carriageway was effectively narrowed to one lane.

When traffic is queueing after the rail crossing closes, the single carriageway means there are delays for vehicles as they disperse, he said.

He said: “If the barriers close someone could be stuck on the crossing.”

A Network Rail spokesman said: “The reason certain areas are missing yellow lines is because when our sub-contractors attended the site to carry out the work there were cars parked in some of the areas.

“We are now working with them to identify a suitable date in the near future to return and complete the work.

“This is likely to be overnight to limit the chances of parked cars being present.”
