MORE than 10 tonnes of rubbish was collected from the streets of Kidlington in just five days.

A council team handpicked two tonnes of litter from the ground, eight tonnes using street sweepers and removed 1.7 tonnes from homes through its bulky waste collection service.

Members of Cherwell District Council’s street cleansing team spent five days carrying out the litter blitz and encouraging residents to recycle more of their waste last month.

People could request up to three large items to be removed from their house for free. More than 40 households took advantage of the offer.

Cherwell District Council’s lead member for clean and green Councillor Debbie Pickford said: “While the amount of rubbish collected during the blitz is a credit to our street cleaners, it is at the embarrassment of those who inflicted it upon the community.

“Although Kidlington is one of the most populated parts of our district, it is still only part of the district and therefore provides an indication of just how much time and effort is required to clean up after those who litter.”

About 100 people attended a free recycling roadshow at Sainsbury’s in Oxford Road where they could chat to environmental officers about waste, recycling and energy issues.
