WORK is progressing in Frideswide Square to regenerate the western entrance to Oxford city centre.

Phase two of the £5.8m redevelopment is under way, with work due to be completed in December.

The scheme started in February and has seen York stone paving slabs laid and a new “boulevard” created linking new roundabouts, which transport bosses hope will improve traffic flow.

Construction workers have been working an extra hour-and-a-half each day and have worked Saturdays, but the county council insisted this was not because the scheme was behind schedule but had always been planned.

Work has recently shifted to the south side of the square with later stages focused on the entrances to Oxford Station, Becket Street, Park End Street and the corner of Rewley Road and Hythe Bridge Street.

Trees are being planted on both the north and south sides of the square.
