AN ECO furniture store that set up shop in a disused carpet warehouse is celebrating its second anniversary.

Oxford Eco Furnishings in Gloucester Green, sells second-hand and upcycled furniture, exhibits artists’ prints and gives away second-hand books free to the public.

Matt Stanbury, who set up the shop at the former Allied Carpets premises on the Seacourt Retail Park in Botley in April 2013, said: “There is nothing in Oxford like this offering crafts and upcycled furniture. I have travelled around the region and seen local co-operatives and pop-up shops set up in other towns, and this seemed a good opportunity.”

Artist Andrew ‘Mani’ Manson helps provide signage and furnishings for the store in return for exhibiting his prints there and says it is helping bring trade to the area.

He said: “Everyone works together and we all bring different things to the shop.

“I don’t like to see spaces unused, so it’s great that this has been set up here. I think it benefits the area and helps to get a lot of people there, and helps of a lot of us too.”

The building, which is owned by the BA pension fund, will eventually become part of a £15m redevelopment of the retail park.
