A CARE home has launched a campaign to raise awareness about Huntington’s disease in honour of one of its residents.

Staff and residents of Willow Green Care Home, in Eastbourne Road, Darlington, have been fundraising and working to raise awareness about the issues underpinning Huntington’s disease.

Beverly Howell, 54, a resident at Willow Green, has been suffering from the disease, which is a hereditary disorder that affects muscle coordination, for more than 20 years and has lost the ability to sit up due to muscle wastage.

The home’s fundraising efforts have been able to buy a custom-made chair for Ms Howell to provide support for her body and prevents pressure sores.

St Martin’s Care Ltd, which owns Willow Green, has also donated £1000 to the Huntington's Disease Association.

Claire Hague, activity co-ordinator, said: “Huntington’s is not as socially recognized as other diseases and Beverly is the one of the main reasons why Willow Green was inspired to undertake this project.”

Over the past month, the staff at Willow Green has organized their own Great British Bake-off, a buffet with the deputy mayor and a raffle.

They are also planning a range of sponsored activities to raise money, including a Onesie Walk at the end of March.

Nicola Laycock, the home’s laundry assistant, has also volunteered to do a parachute jump for the cause.

Willow Green Care Home would like to thank Stanseaton Photography, The Floral Box and 1st Stop Party Shop for their contributions and in-kind support.
