AN ALLOTMENT competition chairman is advising future entrants to put their back into making preparations for the contest now.

Tim Treacher, Oxford city’s best kept allotment competition committee chairman, said he hoped the contest would run again next year.

He said: “The major thing we try to get out to allotment holders is that the more effort you put in at this time of year to get plots cleared and done properly this gets you off to a good start in the spring.”

This year, Rose Hill’s Lenthall Road Allotment won the Alderman Knight Shield for the best kept allotment site and the winner of the challenge trophy, the overall award, was Bill Walley from Lenthall Road Allotment Association.

The contest was run jointly by the Oxford and District Federation of Allotment Associations and the city council parks department.

Rose Hill gardener Michael Fernandes collected the shield last month on behalf of the Lenthall Road Allotment and said: “A lot of hard work has gone into the allotment with everyone playing their part.”
