SCHOOLCHILDREN wore old-fashioned finery for a ride on board a fully-restored steam engine at Didcot Railway Centre.

Youngsters from Stephen Freeman Primary School and Manor Primary School were ushered aboard the Edwardian train - a unique Steam Rail Motor 93, built in 1908.

The centre's education team invited the children for an old-fashioned day of learning on Thursday.

Teacher Gemma Souch, of The Manor School in Didcot, said pupils who took part, including nine-year-olds Molly Ray and Lucas Thomas, told her the trip had been "awesome" and "lots of fun".

Restoration of the vintage motor was finally finished after many years of work back in 2011 and it continues to attract visitors.

Education team leader Helen Prior said: "This is the first time this particular theme has been chosen.

"We look forward to showing the school children our Edwardian local branch line train from the Great Western Railway."
