A DAUGHTER who is in the final of a competition to allow her father to see where her grandfather fought in the First World War said it would be “amazing” to win.

Janet Humphrey, from Didcot, is hoping to get the opportunity to take her father Stan Ball to Gallipoli.

The peninsula, in modern-day Turkey, saw a bloody campaign during the First World War, with Mrs Humphrey’s grandfather Stanley Arthur William Ball one of the thousands who fought.

The #MakeYourWorldBigger competition, run by the Discovery Channel, is entered by people all over the UK to make dream trips a reality.

Mrs Humphrey, 47, who created the “pledge” for the competition, said it would mean the world for her and brother David, 44, to make the journey with her dad, who lost his father aged just 14 after he died from a heart attack in 1950.

The Ladygrove estate resident said: “My dad wasn’t aware of me entering this pledge until I got through to the final, and if we were to win, this would flesh out his father for him.

“He was thrilled when we told him about the pledge.”

Stanley Arthur William Ball was born on May 16, 1880, in south London and joined the Royal Fusiliers City of London regiment. He served in the regular army of 2nd Battalion between July 14, 1898, and October 29, 1910, and his regiment served in India.

He rejoined the army on September 8, 1914, and served in Britain between September 9 and May 9 before he went to join the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, again in Gallipoli, where he remained with them until July 12, 1915, and was awarded the Star Medal.

Despite being wounded there, he joined his comrades in France from September 22 to October 25, 1915. Mr Ball, a sergeant, was wounded again by a bullet in the back and he left the army on September 20, 1917. His family said his injuries eventually led to his death from untreated gangrene in 1950 aged 70.

Mrs Humphrey’s father, also named Stan Ball, 79, who lives in Aylesbury, said: “When my dad died I was just 14 years old and it hit me very badly as I was getting to the point in my life when I would start to get to know him properly, like going to football matches and sharing mutual interests like fishing.

“I will be 80 in March and the chances of me ever visiting a place like Gallipoli and getting the chance to get close to somewhere of great importance in my dad’s life are fast diminishing.”
