ARMED with binoculars and an interest in wildlife, young bird watchers were on the hunt for some rare species on Sunday (February 7).

The Earth Trust, in Little Wittenham, held a Bird Bonanza day to encourage youngsters to learn more about the different feathered friends.

Six-year-old Hannah Green, from Watlington, visited the centre with her two brothers, James and Christopher.

Her mum, Catherine Green, said: "We love the Earth Trust, she's a definite regular there.

"She learnt about the red kite and she has taken all the bird feeders she made today and put them up in the garden."

Youngsters were able to make bird nests and feeders as well as being given activity sheets to try and hunt down different types of birds.

Emmeline Boeser-Hutton, seven, who lives near Florence Park, said her favourite activity was making the bird nests.

She said: "My second favourite thing was seeing three real red kites.

"They did a really cool thing where they showed us a picture of an extinct bird, the dodo."

On February 15 there will be an opportunity at the trust for youngsters to make bird boxes to celebrate National Nest Box Week.
