Twenty-five firefighters tackled a blaze at a former car showroom in Didcot last night following a suspected arson attack.

Fire crews were called at about 11.25pm to the disused TC Motors car sales showroom off the Jubilee Way roundabout.

Station Manager Bob Speakman from Didcot Fire Station said “The fire crews were faced with a challenging incident.

"Upon our arrival the flames were 15 feet above the roof of the premises. Due to the swift action of crews the surrounding buildings and businesses were saved from serious damage."

Oxfordshire Fire Service spokesman Richard Smith said: "The fire started in a shed and then spread to the showroom next to it.

"There was significant damage to the showroom and a fire investigation took place last night - arson is suspected.

"Crews from Didcot, Abingdon and Goring were there until 1.20am and made sure the fire did not spread to neighbouring businesses."

He added that there was nothing to suggest the fire was linked to an ongoing murder investigation, launched after the bodies of a man, woman and child were found in Didcot's Vicarage Road last night.

Mr Smith said no vehicles were damaged in the blaze.

He added that Thames Valley Police have been alerted to the suspected arson attack.
