ABOUT 1,000 homes in the Didcot area were without water due to a burst main near the A34.

Thames Water said the water supply was re-routed to some homes while repair work took place. Customers also experienced a problem with low pressure.

Spokesman Stuart White said the homes were affected after a 12-inch pipe burst at 8pm on Tuesday night, with the supply restored at 11pm.

He added that the burst happened in the middle of a field near Brook Lane so no-one was affected by water leaking from the pipe.

He said: “We worked to restore supplies to properties in the OX11 area following the burst pipe. The vast majority, if not all homes, were back to normal by the morning. We are sorry for any disruption.”

In March, Thames Water handed out more than 20,000 bottles of water to residents in Abingdon following a burst pipe in Culham.

Some homes were left without water and the bottles were delivered to different sites in the town so that they could be collected.

Thames Water said at the time it was handing out the bottles of water as a precaution, in case the supply had been affected.

Last year, residents in Normandy Crescent in Oxford were flooded out of their homes for months after a water main burst in the street. It was the second time the road had been hit by a burst water main, following a similar incident in 2007.
