A HOSPITAL garden created in memory of a nurse who died from a brain tumour was officially opened at the weekend.

The sensory garden at Didcot Community Hospital officially opened its doors on Saturday.

Nurse Gail Castle, who passed away in December 2014, drew up plans for the garden with colleagues, but did not live long enough to see them become a reality.

Now the hospital has completed her work, giving patients a safe space to go and enjoy good weather.

Mum-of-two Mrs Castle, from Wallingford, died just two months after being diagnosed with the tumour and being told she could expect to live for another one to five years.

Her husband Nick, 47, took their children Harry, 19, and Jemma, 16, to the opening.

He said: “I was really impressed, it was very professionally done.

“There were some really nice little touches. Like Gail kept chickens so there were some model chickens in there.”

The garden, which cost £30-£40,000, was funded by the Department of Health in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council.

Mr Castle said: “There were some raised beds in there as well, so older people could do a bit of gardening.

“I can imagine if you were an older person or had a relative in hospital it would be really nice to go out there and get some fresh air and perhaps do a bit of gardening.”
